The Challenge
The abbot envisioned more than a decorative temple wall. The mural needed to honor the Buddha with the reverence of traditional Buddhist storytelling while remaining visually alive for contemporary audiences. Each mural shall carry layers of symbolism, movement, and spiritual meaning. The challenge was balancing sacred precision with emotional energy, creating a composition detailed enough to reward long contemplation. Temple murals are patient things. They reveal themselves slowly, like wisdom and enlightenment.
The Result: Jayamangala Gatha
The finished mural reimagines the Eight Victories of the Buddha as a vivid contemporary visual journey, translating ancient teachings into something emotionally immediate for modern audiences. Scenes of the Buddha overcoming temptation, anger, fear, illusion, pride, and chaos unfold through swirling waves, celestial battles, mythical creatures, and luminous color. Traditional Thai iconography remains intact, but the cinematic composition, bold palette, and layered movement give the work a striking contemporary pulse. It feels timeless and current at once, like sacred storytelling learning a new language without forgetting its roots. The mural was featured on The New York Times newspaper and Instagram in 2022.
