The Challenge
The brief sounded wonderfully simple: create a mural that represents Isan food. But Isan cuisine is more than ingredients on a plate. It’s music, movement, conversation, and the unmistakable rhythm of community. The challenge became capturing that invisible energy, translating the pulse of Northeastern Thailand into a visual language that could be felt before the first bite. After all, some flavors begin with the ears long before they reach the tongue.
The Result: Isan Rhythms
The mural celebrates Isan as a place where rhythm and flavor dance together. Inspired by the lively pulse of Mor Lam and Pong Lang music, the composition pairs musicians, dancers, and cultural icons with bold floral forms and radiant color. Research into sonic seasoning suggests that fast, energetic music heightens our perception of spice, acidity, and intensity, making fiery dishes like Som Tum and Larb feel even more vibrant. Warm saturated hues echo those same flavors, creating a space where culture is not only seen, but almost heard and tasted.
