Guardians of Joy: Suksmith
This work reimagines the Yak, traditionally depicted as a monumental gate guardian in Thai mythology, as a "Guardian of Joy," offering emotional warmth and psychological comfort to people in the contemporary world. The character is named Suksmith, a fusion of the words Suk (happiness) and Smith (maker or craftsperson), embodying the idea of one who creates spaces of emotional safety and well-being. Through vibrant colors, softened forms, and an accessible contemporary visual language, the sculpture invites audiences of all ages into a sense of openness, familiarity, and ease.
Positioned between sacred guardian, contemporary pop sculpture, and approachable cultural ambassador, the figure transforms the traditional role of the Yak into one centered on empathy, belonging, and human connection.
By simplifying classical Thai ornamental motifs and merging them with the proportions and visual sensibility of contemporary art toys, the artist questions what "protection" means in the present day. Beyond physical defense, the work suggests that true protection may also lie in the creation of emotional refuge, a space where one feels comforted, accepted, and safe enough to simply be oneself.
Thai NeXT: When the Seeds Bloom 2026
On May 17, 2026, at Thai NeXT: When the Seeds Bloom, Suksmith made its official debut and was met with something every guardian hopes for: open arms. Conceived as a Guardian of Joy, Suksmith reimagines the traditional Thai Yak not as a warrior or gatekeeper, but as an emotional sanctuary, one that protects through kindness, empathy, and human connection.
What surprised us most was how naturally people of all ages gravitated toward him. Children waved, families posed for photos, strangers stopped to chat, and somewhere along the way, a seven-foot guardian quietly became everyone’s friend. It was a beautiful reminder that joy needs no translation.
Heartfelt thanks to Thai Theatre Foundation, The Royal Thai Consulate-General in New York, and the Thai community for giving Suksmith such a warm first welcome. Every guardian needs a community, and what a wonderful one this is.
